The Bear ~ A poem by Jessie

The Bear

The factory, where I was made
is abandoned now, left in the shade
But there my little life began,
I'll tell you, if I can

They stuffed me, and stitched me
and sewed on my eyes
they knitted a sweater
It was just the right size!

I was put in a box, with others, like me
To be bought, and wrapped, and put under a tree
And then Christmas, finally, it came
And my new bestest friend, she gave me a name

She loved me, it's true, I must confess
I was her prince, and she the Princess
Or maybe a cowbear, and she was my horse
We'd play games for hours, make-believe of course!

I watched her grow older, learning each day
Lost her first tooth, stared in a play
As the years flew by, much less I saw her
She had more important things, than this old, worn bear

From the shelf where I sat, dust covered, alone
I watched as she chatted with friends on the phone
Far from the child, who once loved me so
What happened to her? Well, she started to grow!

And now she is grown up, she left for college now
I'm hoping, I'm dreaming she'll come back, some how
And take me in her arms, and squeeze me tight
And take me to bed, and whisper goodnight

Wait a minute, hold on, just listen to that!
She's back! She's here! She's got a new cat?
She's walking this way! I see her once more!
She puts some of her things, in boxes galore!

The room's almost empty, she's looking under the bed
Could it possibly be, she's looking for her old ted?
She stands up, and sighs, looking sorry for herself
Then, tear-filled, her eyes, are drawn to my shelf

Then letting out a cry, and standing on a chair,
She reaches and touches my dusty, old fur
Her hands slip around my little stuffed belly
She lifts me down, her hands shaking like jelly

For minutes she stares, into my furry face
Then finally she hugs me, in a cosy embrace
She says, "I'm so sorry! For forgetting you!"
Of course I forgive her! What else would I do?

Then she carries me, out of the door
Into her new car, on the seat, not the floor!
We drive round the town! Then go to her new house
Where there, she introduces me, to her kids and her spouse

My best friend is married! And she came back for me!
So my story has an ending, that's happy you see!
Her kids play with me, and treat me so good.
She taught them quite well, as I knew she would.

That's the story of me, a humble old bear
My life, as it was, has been, as it were
Now I live in peace, and I know now, from the start
My best friend, she has for me, a special place in her heart
